Joy - The Shepherd's Candle

Keith Doyle, Senior Pastor - 12/17/2023

Luke 2:8-20; Isaiah 52:6-10; 64:1

This week we will see the familiar story of the Shepherd’s visit to Jesus’ birthplace through the lens of “Gospel Joy”. A joy prophesied in Isaiah 52 and a joy realized in the Angelic announcement to the Shepherd’s. In a stunning fulfillment of prophecy the Angelic host bring an announcement of Messiah’s birth and they invite the “Watchmen”, the Shepherds to be a part of God’s good news story of joy. Luke captures this dramatic scene of the heavens being rend, and of an angelic host singing the good news of God bringing joy to the world.

What hope is there that God will bring true and lasting joy to the world?

  • The Good News Invites Wonder (8-14), “…and they were filled with great fear…Fear not…I bring you good news of great joy…” (9,10)
  • The Good News Inspires Witness (15-19), “…And when they saw it, they made known the saying that had been told them concerning the child…’” (17)
  • The Good News Invokes Worship (20), “…and the shepherd’s returned, glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen” (20)
